Zlata skirt - testing the pattern, part 4

Ariana

Ariana made the View C, with several minor alterations. She pressed the center front and back pleats into box pleats, and pressed the remaining pleats to the sides, thus making them knife pleats. She also topstitshed the top of the pleats. An interesting detail is that she sewed the zipper by hand.

She suggested offering the same pattern in a maxi length, which would surely look great. However, due to the pattern's width the cutting layout would have to be laid on a cross grain instead of a straight grain. Anyways, you can easily lengthen the skirt according to your length preferences.

Mira

Right agter I posted about how Mira pushed me to publish the Zlata skirt pattern for sale, she emailed me again, with some new pics and a new skirt. This time, she made a skirt as a present for her friend. Additionally, she made a matching belt. Isn't she great?

Miss Dibs

Miss Dibs and I have a long history of online chatting and I can't be indifferent about her take on the Zlata skirt. She had a true drama at home while making the skirt, yet she managed to complete the skirt on time, so I am forever grateful to her. She made the view C with taupe linen, and enhanced the pattern lines with a subtle piping. Read more about the skirt and her testing experience on her blog Dibs and the Machine

Jelena

Finally, I have to share with you a great idea that never occurred to me, that was executed by Jelena. You see, she made two skirts while testing the pattern. One of them was made after the View A, using a lovely cotton in blue and pink print. She edgestitched all the pleat folds in order to make the skirt maintenance easier. The skirt turned out so so cute.

Stepalica Patterns: Zlata skirt - pattern testing, Jelena

However, she blew my mind with her second skirt, which she made using the lining pattern, and guess what? The skirt is reversible! She used two kinds of fabrics: a woven fabric with elastine, which has a tiger print, and a plain black jersey. Since both fabrics were stretchy, she omitted a zipper, but she added an elastic to the waist band. The black layer is a bit longer than the printed one, and it gives the skirt a nice balance when worn from the printed side, as it has a black waist yoke. When reversed, the skirt reveals a cute and unexpected trim at the border, which has bias bands in tiger print topstitched over it. Again, the border gives a great balance to the skirt, which now has a waist yoke in the print. I am amazed by Jelena's idea and by how practical and versatile this skirt is.

Zlata suknja - testiranje kroja, deo 4

Ariana

Više o suknji i njenom iskustvu tokom šivenja možete pročitati na njenom blogu Dibs and the Machine

Jelena

Stepalica Patterns: Zlata suknja - testiranje kroja, Jelena

Raki

Raki also made the View C, using a really interesting fabric that combines denim and corduroy weaves, as the denim and corduroy weft strips alternate. In order to match the stripes she cut the pattern along the CF and CB and angled the pattern panels a bit when cutting the fabric.

Zlata skirt - testing the pattern, part 2

Angela

Angela also made the view A using cotton and trimming it with a band in a contrasting color. I have to be honest, I think her skirt is just gorgeous. At the time she sent me pics of her skirt I was sewing my own view A using denim and I was so inspired by Angela's idea that I added a satin ribbon trim to my skirt.

Angela says the sewing was rather intense and she needed to concentrate on the work, but with the instructions and a sewalong guides an advanced beginner would be able to make the skirt on his / her own.

I was thrilled by Angela's commitment to the testing - she noted every single typo in the instructions that I missed. Also, she was very detailed in her comments, suggestions, sending ideas on how to rephrase a certain sentence to make it more clear and understandable. Her comments were very helpful when I was correcting all the steps in the instructions that were not clear enough. If you ever need a pattern tester, I recommend Angela :).

Julijana

Julijana also made the view A. She decorated the skirt with embroidery stitches along the belt loops, pockets and hemline. I like how her skirt combines a classic style with the casual one. The skirt's made of denim, but you can't say it's too informal.

Claire

Claire made a cheerful and colorful skirt using the View B. She used a curtain cotton as the main fabric and the red gabardine for the border and waist yokes. She also shortened the skirt by several inches. I really like her version - it's such a nice skirt for spring! When I completed sewing my skirts I thought having three skirts made with the same pattern was enough, but after seeing Claire's variation I thought of making another similar to hers - cheerful and casual, that would match well with a pair of flats and summer blouses.

Read more about her skirt and testing experience on Claire's blog Ragbags and Gladrags.

Kathy

Kathy made not one but two skirts while testing the pattern! They're both made using the View C pattern, but in different fabrics - one's made of navy cotton, and the other in a plaid fabric. I have to point out Kathy is a very experienced seamstress and she made a clever alteration to the pattern in order to adapt it for working with plaids. You see, the Zlata skirt pattern is not appropriate for plaid and striped fabrics in it's original state (I'll write more on that next week), but a certain alteration can solve this problem. Kathy made an alteration perfectly and I will show you what she did to the pattern in one of the following posts, so stay tuned!

Also, I'd like to thank Kathy for checking out all my measurements conversion from metric system to yards and inches. To make this more specific, Kathy did that while she was waiting for her husband while he was having a surgery! Luckily, Kathy's husband's surgery went well and he is recovering.
